Synopsis:Three brilliant African-American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) -- serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.
I GIVE THIS MOVIE 7 OUT OF 10.
My Review:
The althernate title to this movie in my opinion is "Sassy Black Women." It was quite the charming movie. It was truly remarkable to see the incredible feats these three women achieved; not only for women but for African-American women as well. The film mainly follows Katherine Johnson's (Taraji P. Henson) achievements within NASA as she uses her mathematical and analytical skills to calculate how to get the rocket into space and back safely. Dorothy Vaughan's character (played by Octavia Spencer) spent a lot of the movie furthering her own career by getting the treatment and job title she deserved and ensuring that her fellow African American co-workers got equal treatment as well. Mary Jackson (played by Janelle Monae) pushed to get herself equal education and the same job qualifications as her male workers. All three of the women did really inspiring things. My only complaint may have been that yes there was conflict/issues being African American and women, but other than that there wasn't any real setback or obstacle that the women had to overcome. Don't get me wrong they dealt with horrible circumstances at times but it would have been nice to see an obstacle that is more relatable to others (ex: a rocket ship blows up, a husband is arrested for protesting, someone gets attacked, etc.).
