Synopsis: Seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, are about to face their worst nightmare -- an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town's children. Banding together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard).
I RATE THIS MOVIE 8.5 OUT OF 10.
My Review:
If you have seen the original 1990 Tim Curry version of It, this is an entirely new creature. The movie does a great job capturing all the best parts of the book and took liberties with some of the more abstract book concepts (I personally haven't read the book so I'm basing this on what I have read about the book and what my partner has said about the book). The setting was perfect (I liked that they made it more recent and not set in the 50's) and the music added a nice touch to the mood. The kid actors do a fantastic job making us feel for each of the Loser's club members. Each kid suffers from something, whether this is an abusive father, a controlling mother, being the new kid in town, etc. The movie is really about establishing the kids as characters with strengths and flaws, their relationship with each other, and their journey growing up. The horror element comes from Bill Skarsgard amazing job as Pennywise. He is so perfectly strange, sinister, funny, and terrifying. I wasn't really scared during the movie because I felt I saw the scares coming but the scares were more "whoa, that's so unnerving."
